| Link to Walnut Creek Walnut Creek’s history goes back roughtly 150 years. It’s conception began in 1772, when Captain Pedro Fages lead the first Spanish exploration party into Contra Costa County. They encountered the Bolbones Indians, the original inhabitants of the area now known as Walnut Creek. In 1821 Spain lost its claim to California as a colony after a rebellion by Mexico. Walnut Creek was first known as The Corners because of the intersection of the two dirt roads leading from Pacheco and Oakland. It also marked the spot where the four Mexican land grants crossed. In 1862 The Corners was officially renamed Walnut Creek, with the establishment of the U.S. Post Office in December. Over the years Walnut Creek has developed into a center of world-class travel destinations. It is minutes away from the life and excitement of San Francisco. To the north are some of the world's finest wine producing regions such as Napa, Sonoma, and Alexander Valleys. Quaint vacation get-aways of Monterrey and Carmel-by-the-sea are ninety miles to the south, and the snow-capped mountains surrounding spectacular Lake Tahoe lie just a few hours to the east. Walnut Creek has an abundance of arts and cultural programs that offer something special for everyone. There are more than 220 acres of parks which offer relaxation and calm from busy daily activities. Walnut Creek has preserved over 1,780 acres of pristine open space, which provides a healthy habitat for a growing number of birds and animals. Hiking trails through these areas serve to keep residents in touch with wildlife. The Mt.
